Today’s baseball stats have gone way past the traditional hits, walks, batting average, strikeouts, and runs. Now you see acronyms like OBP, wOBA, OPS, and more. So, let's break down some of the advanced offensive stats that are getting more attention:
On-base Percentage (OBP)
Refers to the number of times a batter reaches base per plate appearance. Times on base include hits, walks, and hit-by-pitches, but do not include errors, times reached on a fielder's choice or a dropped third strike.
OBP Formula = Hits + Walks + Hit by Pitches ÷ At Bat + Walks + Hit by Pitches + Sacrifice Flies
Slugging Percentage
measures the productivity of a batter or how many times they are making productive contact with the ball.
Slugging Percentage formula = (1B) + (2* 2B) + (3*3B) + (4*HR) ÷ At Bats
On – Base Percentage plus Slugging (OPS)
OPS combines OBP with Slugging Percentage. This reveals how much a hitter can reach base as well as hit for average and power.
OPS Formula = OBP + Slugging Percentage
Since it combines the two it can also be represented as:
OPS = At Bats * (hits + Walks + hit by pitches) + Total bases * (At bats + walks + sacrifice flies + hit by pitches) ÷ At bats * (At bats + walks + sacrifice flies + hit by pitches)
Weighted on Base Average (wOBA)
wOBA factors in how a player reaches base rather than just getting on base. Each method of reaching base is determined by how much that event is worth in run production. So, a triple is worth more than a double.
wOBA Formula = .69* walks + .72 * hit by pitches + .89 1B + 1.27 * 2B + 1.62 * 3B + 2.10 *HR ÷ At bats + walks – intentional walks + sacrifice flies + hit by pitches
Isolated Power (ISO)
Measures the raw power of a player by taking into account only extra base hits.
ISO Formula = slugging percentage – batting average
Or
2B + 2*3B + 3 * HR ÷ At bats
Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP)
BABIP measures a player’s batting average only for balls hit in the field of play. This does not count home runs just balls that were put in play for example, a triple would count for a players BABIP.
BABIP Formula – (hits – HR) ÷ (At bats – HR +Sacrifice Flies)
There are many more advanced metrics when it comes to offense. However, these are the ones that are getting more attention. We hope you found this informative and stay tuned next week as we take a look at advanced pitching stats.
